Utica College: RN to BS online degree program

Utica College (UC) is a private college in upstate New York accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. UC's beautiful campus, which is adorned by flowering gardens, expansive lawns, and outdoor sculptures, sits on 128 acres in a residential section of Utica, New York. Attracting roughly 3,000 students a year, the college currently offers 37 undergraduate majors, 27 minors, and 17 graduate programs.

Several years ago, UC began presenting programs via the Internet. Utica College's online suite of health care programs includes an advanced graduate certificate in gerontology, an MS in Health Care Administration, a post-professional MS in Occupational Therapy, and a transitional doctorate in Physical Therapy. Through its Department of Nursing, students may now pursue an online RN-BS degree, an option that presents an enormous amount of flexibility to registered nurses with existing family and work commitments.

    Online program

UC's goal is to provide comprehensive education while ensuring a strong foundation for those continuing their studies in specialized nursing areas.

RN-BS program. Launching this month, the online Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program was developed to assist licensed ADN professionals in furthering their education, earning potential, and opportunities for advancement. It emulates the on-campus program, and is approved by the New York State Education Department and the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. The program combines both liberal arts and professional education to make certain students have the requirements needed to advance their professional practice. It allows for a schedule convenient to each student, as there is no need to commit to a set class time.

A maximum of 60 credits may be transferred from an approved, accredited 2-year institution, and additional credits may be transferred from another 4-year institution. Upon matriculation, 30 transfer credits in nursing—which are included in the total 60 credits—are granted toward the baccalaureate degree based on an active nursing license.

Admission to the program may be competitive. Applicants must possess a current RN license and an Associate Degree in Nursing from a regionally accredited school. What's more, candidates must have completed courses in Anatomy and Physiology, General Chemistry, and Microbiology. (Lab courses are not offered online.) There are no residencies required for the program.

Prior to graduation, students must keep a good academic standing and complete all of the required coursework. To earn the RN-BS degree, the completion of a minimum of 120 credit hours is required, and students must achieve a C in all nursing and major-related courses and maintain an overall 2.5 cumulative grade-point average.
